ADD/ADHD

ADD/ADHD Disorders & Treatment

Increasingly parents, and some General Practitioners are turning to alternative therapies to try to alleviate childhood conditions for which traditional medicine often has few resources except the prescription of medication.

Dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADD/ADHD, obsessive-compulsive disorders, Tourette's Syndrome and general behavior problems can be, and often are, debilitating for the child and family alike, and can dramatically affect the quality of life for all.

ADD/ADHD is caused by an imbalance in brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. When these neurotransmitters are not in balance the following symptoms can be present.

  • Anxiety
  • Difficulty paying attention
  • Sense of urgency
  • Feelings of uneasiness
  • Inability to sleep

No "Drug" can put these neurotransmitters into natural balance

ADD/ADHD drugs simply artificially manipulate the neurotransmitters. This method may effectively boost concentration, but often leaves a person feeling "not myself" or unable to express their personality. The drugs don't fix the source of the problem, and they can create many more negative side effects such as:

  • Inability to sleep
  • Lack of appetite
  • Zombie-like effect
  • Heart Problems

Most ADD/ADHD drugs have the same effect on the body as cocaine! (Class II drug based on effects on the body...second only to Class I which contains heroin.)

How We Can Help

At Khalil Family Wellness & Intervention, we specialize in the use of Auriculotherapy for the treatment of children, and adults, with ADD/ADHD. The World Health Organization now recognizes Auriculotherapy as a means of diagnosis and treatment for conditions such as compulsive disorders, learning disorders, behavioral problems and Attention Deficit Disorder. Generally, nerve reflex points on the ear are only evident when there is a condition to be diagnosed, making Auriculotherapy a highly effective diagnostic tool.

Cognitive Therapy and Positive Behavioral Reinforcement is the second of the 3 prongs of management of ADD/ADHD.  Treatment with behavioral techniques alone will improve symptoms to some extent. The cornerstone of this approach is "structured daily routines." Even though persons with ADD/ADHD appeared to be less structured in their behavior and habits, they respond well to a daily schedule and time limits.

Nutrition also plays an important role in both physical and mental health. Amino Acid Therapy helps to restore normal neurotransmitter activation and production. We evaluate and design nutritional and supplement programs to meet the nutritional needs of each individual.
