OCD & Compulsive Disorders

Obsessive Compulsive Behavior

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is an anxiety disorder which is characterized by recurrent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions), and/or repetitive behaviors (compulsions). Repetitive behavior such as hand-washing, counting, checking or cleaning are often performed with the hope of preventing obsessive thoughts, or making them go away. Performing these so called "rituals" however, only offers temporary relief at best, but not performing them and trying to push the thoughts out of one's mind often significantly increases anxiety.

Some common obsessions include having frequent thoughts that loved ones are at risk or repetitive thoughts that are prohibited by one's religious beliefs. Persons with OCD may also be preoccupied with order and symmetry, constantly organizing and reorganizing things, or have difficulty throwing things out, so they accumulate, or hoard unneeded items.

OCD affects about 2.2 million American adults, and the problem can be accompanied by other anxiety disorders or depression. It strikes men and women in about equal numbers and usually appears in childhood, adolescence or early adulthood. One third of adults with OCD develop symptoms as children and research indicates that OCD might run in families.

The course of the disease is often varied. Symptoms can come and go, ease over time or get worse. If OCD becomes severe, it can keep a person from working or carrying out normal responsibilities. Some sufferers may try to help themselves by avoiding situations that trigger their obsessions or compulsions, or they may use alcohol or drugs to calm themselves.

How Auriculotherapy Helps OCD

By applying the FDA approved electro micro-current administered in Auriculotherapy to specific points along the ear's surface, the brain is stimulated to secrete neurotransmitters such as endorphins, serotonin and dopamine, which in turn calms behaviors and compulsions. When a person is experiencing the "feel good" chemistry of the brain, the anxiety driven thoughts and rituals are no longer necessary. For more information about Auriculotherapy, please click here.
